  91.  Ms McManus  Information on Liz McManus  Zoom on Liz McManus   asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources  Information on Noel Dempsey  Zoom on Noel Dempsey   his response to the surplus of €6.8 million posted by RTE in 2004; the way in which the national broadcaster plans to spend this surplus over the next year; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources (Mr. N. Dempsey): Information on Noel Dempsey  Zoom on Noel Dempsey  It is positive that the financial position of RTE has improved to the extent that it has achieved modest surpluses in two successive years having incurred significant deficits of €46 million and €22 million in 2001 and 2002 respectively.

Under the Broadcasting Acts 1960 to 2001, it is a matter for RTE to decide how to use the finan[224]cial resources available to it to best deliver on its statutory mandate.
