Mr. McGinley
asked the
Minister for Transport
his views on the introduction of roadside drug driving testing; when he will introduce same; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
[35806/06]
Minister for Transport (Mr. Cullen):
It is illegal in Ireland to drive while under the influence of drugs to such an extent as to be incapable of having proper control of the vehicle. The evidential testing in a Garda station for the presence of drugs is already provided for in the Road Traffic [1602]Acts. Currently, there is no legislative provision to allow for preliminary roadside testing for drugs as there is no available approved method for the taking of such a test. However, significant research in relation to this issue has been and continues to be pursued, and the Medical Bureau of Road Safety is keeping abreast of developments in this area.
